Our Origin

A Community Born in 1979

The Antwerp Indian Association (AIA) was established in 1979 to represent and serve the Indian community in Antwerp. Since its inception, AIA has functioned under the guidance of the Embassy of India, working in close alignment with its objectives to strengthen community engagement and promote India's presence in Belgium.

AIA began as a volunteer-led initiative, organizing small meetings and community activities from a local office. Early efforts included the creation of a formal membership structure and family-oriented Diwali gatherings, which for several years were held in local office halls. These initiatives laid the foundation for AIA's strong cultural identity.

What We Do

Our Pillars of Growth

Sports & Recreation

As the community grew, AIA expanded into sports and recreational activities, establishing dedicated cricket and badminton clubs. The Indian Ambassador became the Patron of AIA, and Embassy officials began providing weekly consular services from the AIA office, offering vital support to the community.

Honorary Consulate

With increasing goodwill and official permission from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, AIA reached a significant milestone by becoming the Honorary Consulate of India. A dedicated office was created for consular services, and an Honorary Consul General was appointed.

Global Recognition & Culture

Over the years, AIA's Diwali cultural celebrations grew into internationally recognized events, featuring renowned Indian artists such as:

Shah Rukh Khan Shreya Ghoshal Neha Kakkar

Today, the AIA Cricket Club is recognized as one of the leading cricket clubs in Belgium. In 2015, AIA played a key role in organizing the official visit of Narendra Modi to Belgium. AIA's long-standing service to the Indian diaspora has been formally recognized with an award from the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

Our Mission

Service and Community

The Antwerp Indian Association continues to operate as a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization, guided by the principles of inclusivity, cooperation, and service. Through cultural, sporting, and community initiatives, AIA strengthens bonds within the Indian diaspora while contributing positively to the multicultural fabric of Antwerp.
